The Personal Branding Secret Most People Overlook

During my layoff, I heard everything:

  • Show up daily online
  • Be real
  • Apply for everything.

In theory, this all sounds great.

However, in practice, I was a mess.

Over time, I realized I didn't need more content tips; I needed a mentor.

This week, let's break down the role of mentorship in personal branding.

Mentors Help You Build a Brand that Feels Authentic to You

If you're going through a layoff, your confidence will be down.

You will start questioning everything:

  • Your background
  • Your experience
  • Even your self-worth.

Having a mentor can help ease that pain.

They can remind you about all your successes and help you connect those moments to what value you can bring.

During my layoff, I reached out to mentors from previous jobs and even classmates.

Doing this helped get my personal brand off the ground.

The best ideas often come from real conversation with others.

Your Mentor Doesn't Need to be a Celebrity

Most people believe that mentors have to be:

  • CEO's
  • Best sellers
  • Influencers

While it's great to know people in those positions, the best mentors are those who walked your path recently.

They remember what it's like to be laid off and what works today.

Take some time to scroll through your LinkedIn connections and see who you can contact.

Find people who:

  • Share content you like
  • Has a story you admire
  • Worked with you previously.

Send a thoughtful message and ask if they would like to connect one day over the phone or virtually.

Be human. Don't pitch yourself. No one likes to be sold to.

One authentic conversation can change everything.

Leverage Your Mentorship to Enhance Confidence and Clarity

I've talked about personal branding in previous editions.

Personal branding is not a checklist.

Your online brand is about answering three questions:

  • Who are you?
  • How do you show up?
  • What do you do?

Sometimes, someone else can see that more clearly than you can.

Mentors won't build your brand for you.

But they can help you build and shape it to make it authentic to yourself.

When you start to own it, you will show up differently for employers and hiring managers.

You will be more confident and more authentic.

The Right Mentor Won't Do Everything for You; They Will Guide You Along the Way

Mentorship is great, especially during a layoff.

The best part?

Having someone who helps inspire confidence to trust yourself.

Good mentors don't hand you a map.

They hold up a mirror and help you turn your experiences into a strategic and sincere brand.

That's when your brand will start to resonate with recruiters and yourself.

It's not designed to impress others.

It's designed to be you.

Stay Branded and Keep Building.
